I am a Canadian lawyer, back in my home country after 5 years living in one of the most spectacular food cities - Melbourne, Australia!

This blog started out as a way for me to keep my amazing friends and family in Australia apprised of our news from afar. One day I posted a list of all the things I missed about Melbourne, and my good friend Veronica pointed out that nearly all of them were about food. It was at that point I realised that what I really wanted to be writing about was food.

So I did.

My life-long loveaffair with food began, as I'm sure it has for many, in my mother's kitchen.
In fact, most of my happiest and clearest memories took place with food as the main character. On Saturday mornings, mum would make bread in her enormous (to my 4 year-old self) white ceramic mixing bowl leaving it, topped with a fresh tea towel on the central heat register to rise yeastily. Today, some 30-odd years later, the smell of yeast is still the smell of seven o'clock on a Saturday morning for me.

Food in my family was all about love. Good meals were the way the women on both sides of my family cared for their husbands and children for generations. Gramma fed you because she loved you. She fulfilled her purpose on earth by ministering to her family's need for nourishment. My mother and aunties, and now I and my sister, have inherited this gene.

I may be a lawyer by day, but by night I am a chef, and a hostess and a flower arranger and stylist. I run my own imaginary cafe: an intimate little 10-table affair with a well chosen wine list and a menu consisting of 4 or 5 carefully selected and prepared, perfect dishes for each course. My customers are my family and friends. Because I love them.
