This summer has made an enourmous difference in the variety of fruits and vegetables that Silas will eat. I had a vague hunch that having him help grow and pick food would encourage him to try it, and has. Before June, when our blueberry bush began to bear ripe fruit, Silas would never willingly have touched a fresh blueberry. Now he can't get enough. He's tried tomatoes too, which is a coup.
We have the good fortune to live a block or so away from an awesome little playground which is ringed by blackberry bushes and also has a few plum and apple trees. We only meant to take the kids for some swing and slide time last Sunday and ended up fishing the plastic beach pails out of the stroller basket when we discovered a motherlode of blackberries that we could pick while watching the kids. We ended up picking 8 litres worth and Silas walked home with a smeary purple face and stained hands.
Even if there aren't any free berries near where you live, maybe there's a u-pick. I totally underestimated how much fun Silas would have berry picking. He was delighted just eating berries out of the plastic Elmo pail and picking the odd berry or two, but mostly, just watching us pick. Plus, now we get to eat all the goodies.
